Mimi Planas - Miami Dade County Commission District 10

Welcome to my 2010 Campaign Website

A leader is someone who recognizes the needs of their constituency as their own. My intention is to do exactly this - to put YOU first. I am running for District 10 Commissioner because I know from years of residence in Miami-Dade County that some of our most important issues have been politicized and remain unaddressed.

As Commissioner, I will ensure that District 10 is equally represented inside and outside the Commission chambers. I will involve people who strongly embrace the direction and values of this District and believe in it as much as I do. I have watched this community grow. I’ve watched my neighbors struggle and triumph over years of hard work.

Why I am Running For Office

I have been a resident of this community for over 30 years. I have seen my neighbors struggle and succeed, but I have always known it to rally behind the spirit of camaraderie.

My reasons for running in this Campaign are honest and simple.

My final decision to run for the Commission was cemented after experiencing the deep emotion of this one particular day. Sometime this past winter, I woke up one morning and stepped out to my terrace, where I usually sip my Cuban coffee before going to work. I was listening to my son playing in the background. I would glance at him from time to time and I couldn’t help but smile at the happiness he got from something so simple. I started to think about his future. Then, I began to think about life and my place in it, as well as what was currently happening in our community and how it is affecting and will continue to affect my family. I went to bed that night concerned - concerned about my family and about others that are in my shoes, concerned about those who have much less than I and about the current state of the economy. I wondered how I could get the voice of the people, the average person, directly to the leaders without having to back pedal or sugar coat the severity of our situation. It was my time to stand up. I need to speak for those who aren’t being heard. I need to represent the the people of District 10 and take their voice where it should be heard, straight to our local leaders.

After making the decision to run, I felt a sense of pride and satisfaction knowing that maybe - just maybe the single mom, the son or daughter caring for their elderly parents, the grandmothers and grandfathers, the families and everyone living in our community can have a stronger voice, one that would resonate and empower the people like never before.

I am running for Miami-Dade County Commissioner with integrity, humility and loyalty. This community is ours. Its fate should not lay in the hands of special interests. I am excited to take the voice of the people to the heart of the County.
